Top 10 Most Common Boiler Problems

As an appliance that is used so often and for long periods of time, it is unsurprising that boilers can occasionally develop faults. However, some faults are more common than others and this article will detail the top 10 issues that boiler owners suffer the most.  This will hopefully help you to identify and problems you may have with your boiler, or increase your awareness of these issues so you can spot them before they worsen.

Boiler switching itself on and off

This could be down to a lack of water pressure or a problem with the thermostat. Have the valves of your boiler inspected to ensure that none of them are closed, as this will cut off the water flow to the tank. If neither of these turn out to be the cause, check that the pump is circulating water as it should be.

Pilot light going out

Your pilot light is a small flame that lights the gas from the main burner. If this flame goes out, the main burner still releases a small amount of gas, which can lead to a dangerous build up. This could be due to a broken thermocouple or a draught that is blowing out the flame.

Faulty thermostat

A way to tell if your thermostat is in need of replacement is if it is showing the incorrect temperature, or if it is turning your heating and hot water on or off at random.

Kettling

Kettling is caused by lime scale building up on your boiler’s heat exchange. This is particularly common on older models, as the lime scale is accrued by usage over time.

Dripping and leaking

This can be caused by a multitude of problems, so one of the more accurate ways of determining what has caused the issue is by checking where exactly the leak is coming from.

Loss of pressure

Usually caused by a water leak somewhere in your system, you may notice an inconsistent amount of water coming from your taps, or no water at all. If the cause is not a water leak, it could be a faulty pressure valve in need of replacement

Frozen pipes

This problem should be tackled by a registered professional. Obviously these problems are more common in winter, and if you suspect you may have a frozen pipe, get it resolved as soon as possible as it can soon worsen.

Error code on control panel

Some error codes on your control panel may have a simple solution, but others may prove more stubborn. If you are unsure what the error code means, contact a professional engineer and arrange a visit.

Unusually noisy during use

If you are hearing strange bangs and gurgles from your boiler while it is being used, this could also be a sign of low water pressure or even kettling.

Non-functioning boiler

The most obvious sign that you need boiler repairs or replacement is that your boiler just isn’t working at all. If this is the case, contact a professional engineer to see if there’s a problem that can be fixed, or if a new system is necessary.
