LPG – How to Stay Gas Safe

LPG tank placed in a garden

The use of LPG carries with it many rules regarding its safe use and installation, all of which should be adhered to strictly in order to ensure maximum safety. When choosing an installer of your liquefied petroleum gas system, make sure that you get the details of the work recorded in writing, particularly the following:

1. The date of the commencement of work, the length of the process and who will be notifying Local Authority Building Control when necessary.

2. The details of the work, the materials that will be used and the appliances that will be included.

3. Extra inclusions such as warranties, whether they are for the appliances themselves, materials or workmanship

There are also steps you need to take to ensure the validity of those who are carrying out the work for you. It is vital that you make sure the engineer or engineers working on your LPG system are Gas Safe Registered, and ask to see their accreditation before any work can begin. By choosing a Gas Safe Registered engineer, you can be sure of their authenticity and experience, and you eliminate the risk of using ‘cowboy traders’.

After the job has been completed, paperwork and documents must be filled out by the engineer. Benchmark, which is the national scheme for boilers, ensures that both the manufacturers and engineers share the responsibility for implementing the best possible practices when installing a system. Your Local Authority must be notified of the installation of every appliance barring flueless cookers, and it is your engineer’s job to notify them.

Once you are happy with the installation and the work of the engineer, you can start to use your appliances. It is important to remember, however, that each appliance needs to undergo regular servicing and a safety check at least once a year.

Here at A&D Plumbing, we are experts in the supply, installation, maintenance and repair of boilers from the leading manufacturers. All our engineers are Gas Safe Registered, so you can rest assured that you will receive the best possible service from start to finish.
