About The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive

The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive is a scheme introduced by the government to encourage people to make use of renewable heat in their home. By using the scheme correctly, homeowners will receive quarterly payments for seven years in accordance with the amount of green renewable energy their homes produce.

The scheme is open to anyone who meets the joining requirements. Not every heating system is eligible for the scheme, so it is important that anyone who wants to join is sure that their system meets the requirements. Eligible systems are:

• Biomass-only boilers and biomass pellet stoves
• Air source heat pumps
• Ground source heat pumps
• Flat plate and evacuated tube solar thermal panels

As well as restrictions on the type of system that can be eligible, the purpose of the system is also required to meet a certain standard. For example, biomass pellet systems and boilers, air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps must be used for ‘space heating’, which is heating rooms in a house. These heat sources must also use a ‘liquid filled heat exchanger’, such as a radiator, to provide the heat for the room(s). Your system must also have been installed after 15th July 2009 and, if it was installed before the scheme started (9th April 2014), you have until 9th April 2015. Otherwise, you have 12 months from when your system was installed to apply for the scheme.

The payments that you receive vary on the type of system that you have installed. The tariffs that the government have set in place are allocated according to how many kilowatts of renewable heat your heating system generates per hour:

• Biomass boilers and biomass stoves – 12.2p
• Air source heat pumps – 7.3p
• Ground source heat pumps – 18.8p
• Solar thermal – 19.2p

While the DRHI will save you money on your heating use, if your home is on mains gas then this option will save you more money than taking part in the DRHI. The homes that will benefit most from the DRHI are those that are not on the gas grid but still use oil and electricity.
