5 Winter Boiler Tips

Plumbers unloading vans with a new boiler for a client

Christmas is approaching and the time for cranking the heating up a few notches is well and truly upon us. Homes up and down the country will be shutting the windows and doors, bringing out the draught excluders and turning the thermostat up to fight off the bitter winter cold. However, with the extra work that your boiler will be doing, it is important that you carry out some checks to ensure everything is running smoothly.

Regular Heating Checks

It is not recommended that you keep your heating completely switched off during colder times, as the system then needs to work harder to heat up, which can cause damage. By periodically checking your system’s ability to heat up and cool down, you can prepare for the colder times better, safe in the knowledge your boiler can heat up when you need it to do so.

Bleed your Radiators

If you notice that there are areas on your radiator that aren’t as warm as others or are not heating up at all, this is a sign you need to bleed your radiators. Air can become trapped which can prevent heat from reaching certain areas – this can have a detrimental effect on your boiler, so by simply bleeding your radiators and letting the air out, you will help restore the system to full working order.

Read Instructions

By becoming familiar with your boiler’s user guide, you can give yourself the opportunity to know more about the system and perhaps fix faults yourself, avoiding the need to call professionals over a relatively minor issue.

Boiler Servicing

Regular boiler servicing is a very important feature in the longevity of your heating system. By arranging for an annual servicing, a professional can inspect your boiler and repair any faults or carry out any necessary maintenance, saving you the inconvenience of a major breakdown.

Check Pressure

If you are noticing that your heating is taking longer to come on or your water is taking longer to heat up, this could be a sign that there is a pressure issue. Similarly, if your water is not coming out of taps or shower heads as quickly as it normally does, this could also be an indicator of a lack of pressure. Inspect pipes for leaks and if you do not find any, you can use the valve handle within your system to increase the pressure. Please remember to switch off your boiler before doing so.
